You sell a product at ₹1,000 MRP — and assume ₹1,000 is your revenue?
That is the most common — and most costly — mistake Amazon sellers make.
A portion of that ₹1,000 belongs to the government as GST. And if you are not claiming your ITC, you are leaving thousands of rupees on the table every single month.

⚠️
₹53,500
Monthly calculation error on just 500 units — if you ignore GST on MRP
💡

4 Things Every Amazon Seller Must Know About GST & Profit

Before we go through the formulas, here is the big picture. These are the four concepts this guide covers — each one directly impacts your per-unit profit calculation.

01
GST on Revenue
Your MRP includes GST. Your actual revenue in hand is MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate) — not the full MRP.
02
ITC on COGS
The GST you paid on your purchase cost is recoverable. Your effective COGS is lower than what you paid.
03
ITC on Amazon Fees
Amazon charges 18% GST on referral fee and FBA charges. This GST is also claimable as ITC.
04
GST Slab Verification
Using the wrong GST slab (e.g. 18% instead of 12%) skews every number. Always verify via your HSN code.
All Concepts at a Glance
Concept What It Means Formula / Rule Impact on Profit
GST on Revenue Reduces Revenue MRP includes GST — government's share must be separated first Revenue = MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate)
₹1000 ÷ 1.12 = ₹892.86
₹107 less revenue per ₹1,000 MRP at 12% GST
ITC on COGS Reduces Cost GST paid on purchase cost is recoverable from the government ITC = COGS − (COGS ÷ (1 + GST Rate))
₹400 − ₹357.14 = ₹42.86 ITC
Effective COGS drops from ₹400 to ₹357.14
ITC on Amazon Fees Reduces Cost 18% GST on referral fee + FBA is claimable as ITC ITC = (Referral Fee + FBA) × 18/118
₹90 + ₹50 fees → ₹25.20 ITC
₹25+ recovered per unit on fees alone
GST Slab Check Verify First Slabs vary: 5%, 12%, 18%. Wrong slab = wrong calculation Check HSN code on GST portal
gstcouncil.gov.in → HSN Search
Using 18% vs 12% = ₹53,500 error on 500 units
₹892
Real revenue from ₹1,000 MRP at 12% GST
₹68
Total ITC recovered per unit (COGS + fees combined)
500×
Units per month = ₹87,500 impact if both errors are ignored
2
Requirements to claim ITC — GST-registered supplier + timely GSTR-3B filing

📐
Formula 1 of 4
GST on Revenue — Your Real Revenue from MRP
Revenue
Formula
Revenue in Hand = MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate)
GST Amount      = MRPRevenue in Hand
Worked Example — ₹1,000 MRP · 12% GST
MRP (selling price on Amazon) ₹1,000.00
GST Rate (verify via HSN code) 12%
Revenue in Hand = ₹1,000 ÷ 1.12 ₹892.86
GST paid to government − ₹107.14
💡 On 500 units/month, using ₹1,000 instead of ₹892.86 as revenue = ₹53,500 calculation error every month. Always strip GST first.
🏷️
Formula 2 of 4
ITC on COGS — Recover GST Paid on Purchase Cost
ITC · COGS
Formula
ITC on COGS = COGS − (COGS ÷ (1 + GST Rate))
Effective COGS = COGSITC on COGS
Worked Example — COGS ₹400 Inclusive of 12% GST
COGS paid to supplier (GST inclusive) ₹400.00
Base cost ex-GST = ₹400 ÷ 1.12 ₹357.14
ITC recoverable = ₹400 − ₹357.14 + ₹42.86
Effective COGS after ITC ₹357.14
💡 Requirement: supplier must be GST registered with a valid tax invoice. Without this, ITC on COGS cannot be claimed.
📦
Formula 3 of 4
ITC on Amazon Fees — Referral Fee + FBA
ITC · Fees
Formula — Amazon charges 18% GST on all fees
ITC on Referral = Referral Fee (incl.) × 18 ÷ 118
ITC on FBA      = FBA Charge (incl.) × 18 ÷ 118
Total Fee ITC    = ITC on Referral + ITC on FBA
Worked Example — Referral ₹106 · FBA ₹59 (GST inclusive)
Referral Fee paid (incl. 18% GST) ₹106.00
ITC on Referral = ₹106 × 18/118 + ₹16.17
FBA Charge paid (incl. 18% GST) ₹59.00
ITC on FBA = ₹59 × 18/118 + ₹9.00
Total ITC on Amazon fees ₹25.17
💡 Amazon's tax invoices are available in Seller Central automatically. Claim this ITC every month in your GSTR-3B — most sellers miss it entirely.

Formula 4 of 4
Full Profit Calculation — Putting It All Together
Final Formula
Complete Profit Formula
Revenue         = MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate)
  − COGS        (ex-GST, after ITC)
− Referral Fee (ex-GST, after ITC)
− FBA Charge   (ex-GST, after ITC)
= Gross Profit per Unit (before ad spend)
Worked Example — Full Calculation at ₹1,200 MRP
Revenue in Hand (₹1,200 ÷ 1.12) ₹1,071.43
COGS after ITC (₹380 → eff. ₹339.29) − ₹339.29
Referral Fee after ITC (₹106 → eff. ₹89.83) − ₹89.83
FBA after ITC (₹59 → eff. ₹50.00) − ₹50.00
Gross Profit per Unit (before ads) ₹592.31
💡 This is your gross profit before ad spend. Use this number to calculate your Breakeven ACoS. The free SelluxPro calculator does all of this automatically.
Total ITC Summary — Per Unit (Example Product)
ITC on COGS (₹380 at 12% GST) + ₹40.71
ITC on Referral Fee (₹106 at 18% GST) + ₹16.17
ITC on FBA Charge (₹59 at 18% GST) + ₹9.00
Total ITC Recovered Per Unit ₹65.88
On 500 units/month → ₹32,940 recovered. Two requirements: (1) GST-registered supplier with proper invoice, (2) timely GSTR-3B filing each month.

GST on Revenue — Your Real Revenue from MRP
Formula
Formula
Revenue in Hand = MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate)

Summary

What You Learned in Module 1

01
MRP is not your revenue

Always calculate revenue as MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate). At 12% GST, ₹107 from every ₹1,000 belongs to the government — not you.

02
Claim ITC on your COGS

The GST embedded in your purchase cost is fully recoverable — reducing your effective COGS significantly. Requires a GST-registered supplier with a valid invoice.

03
Claim ITC on Amazon fees too

Amazon charges 18% GST on Referral Fee and FBA. This is claimable every month via GSTR-3B. Most sellers miss this entirely.

04
Always verify your GST slab

Slabs range from 5% to 18%. Check your HSN code on the GST portal. Using the wrong rate makes every calculation wrong from the start.
